Why cruising sailors are highly unlikely to spend $149,000 on a wind-seeking device
A lot of racing professionals don’t get cruising. At all.
Phil Rogers, CEO of the company that makes the new Racer’s Edge laser wind-measurement device (linked HERE), appears to be in those ranks.
He was quoted as saying that the device, which is being used in the America’s Cup and costs US$149,500, is ‘not only aimed at yacht racing but some of the top cruising yachts could certainly benefit from this technology.’
I’m afraid that did make me laugh. Doesn’t he know what cruising sailors do when there’s no wind?
Why spend $149,000 to gauge if there’s wind up ahead when you can motor right over there and find out for sure?
