A photo of the Super J and her unusual bow

A bit belatedly, here’s an arresting photo of Ranger at the Rolex Maxi Worlds. It was taken by Sally Collison, who was once our picture editor at Yachting World before she went over to the other side.

Sally has a terrific eye and her work keeps getting better and better; do take a look at her gallery.

Nothing I’ve seen before quite captures the ‘jolie laide’ appearance of Ranger’s snub-nosed barrel bow. When she was built in 1936, the J measurement (foretriangle base) was set and the defining measurement was waterline length, so its purpose was merely to save build weight.
